Notes: |
The Gomme Sledge was designed by E. D. Gomme in conjunction with Dr L.G.C.E. Pugh who led the expedition. Following Gomme's very successful design for skis, Pugh approached Gomme to develop a sledge based upon the Swiss rescue sledges (Blood Wagons). The result culminated in an extremely strong, durable and light sledge made of laminated birch veneers glued using 'Aerodux' 185 Resorcinot Formaldehyde Resin Adhesive. The sledge sat on runners of English ash. ref: Online Archive of California - Technical Notes 199 C.I.B.A. (A.R.L.) Ltd. MSS 0491, Sept 1959, 'Glued Sledges of Novel Design Give Excellent Service'. Leslie Dandy also mentions; 'Six sledges were made that could be bolted together as a double to form a bridge for crossing crevasses etc.' ref: HWFA Research Material, Oliver Heal, 21.09.2007, 'Notes on a conversation with Leslie Dandy; Princes Risborough.
