...Ercol people smile at the fascination visitors have with the alchemy of the kiln chambers, for it's in the woodyard, out in the open air, that most of the waywardness is drawn from beech, elm and ash, in long, patient years of maturing. One year per inch of thickness is the rule, before the plank is brought for its final acclimatisation.
