Title: Ercol: Kiln Drying
Photographer: unknown
Date: c. 1988
Decade: 1980-1989
Manufacturer: Ercol Furniture Ltd.
People: Bob Mawson
Description: B/W photographic print showing: Bob Mawson studying temperature charts for the drying kilns.
Text Transcript: ...Ercol people smile at the fascination visitors have with the alchemy of the kiln chambers, for it's in the woodyard, out in the open air, that most of the waywardness is drawn from beech, elm and ash, in long, patient years of maturing. One year per inch of thickness is the rule, before the plank is brought for its final acclimatisation. But there is, nonetheless; an essential element of wizardry in that kilning whose secret they would not willingly part with. .. ref: Ercol catalogue 1988, page 8.
